Why is it called the sturgeon moon?
August's full moon is often referred to as the sturgeon moon, dubbed by Algonquin tribes who lived in what is known as the northeastern U.S. today. The name refers to the large fish that were more easily caught around this time of year in the Great Lakes and other bodies of water.
